Chapter 2
Celeste looked at the tall iron-wrought fence surrounding the building in front of her. She checked her watch. She sighed softly and went up to the gate. Seeing the call button, she hit it.
“What is your business?”
“Uh… Adam told me to come here.” Celeste stated.
“Adam who?”
“Adam… Jones, I believe.” She answered. A loud buzzed issued from the speaker and the gate popped open. Celeste walked through towards the building.
Celestine pushed the door open and looked around the small foyer. In the small area, 3 guys and another girl stood around. As she entered, they all looked at her. Celeste looked back and blinked, her eyes narrowed.
“I feel bad for you two girls…” A man chuckled. “Out numbered by us guys… Hope this isn’t going to be a team battle; men versus women…” He added. Celeste looked at him.
“I don’t know about you but I see 3 women here. We outnumber the men.” She calmly stated. The other girl chuckled behind her hand as she looked away. Celeste and the man held gazes for a few moments, then he looked away.
A clock in the back of the foyer called it to be 8:50. Footsteps came from the top of the stairs and 2 suited men appeared.
“Everyone, join at the bottom of the stairs.” One voice directed. The small group looked at one another and did as they were told hesitantly.
“Good. Now, how about some introductions. I’m Agent Canes and this is Agent Jones.” Canes explained. The two walked down the stairs and Celeste looked at them both. Jones looked at her and gave a small smile. “Coming down in a few seconds will be Agent Trauski… His partner was, sadly, killed on a mission… One of you will become his new partner.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” One of the guys interrupted. “What if we don’t want to do this? We weren’t informed about this!” he snapped, then was followed by a murmur of ‘yea’s.
“Apparently you all knew you were coming here for some type of fighting. It is an honor to be apart of the government.”
“Hey- if I wanted to be in the government, I would’ve joined the service.” Another male butted in.
“This has better pay and opportunities than a service.” Canes explained.
“If you’ve lost interest in this, then leave now.” Jones added.
The whole time, Celestine had sat back quietly. She listened to them arguing and sighed, “Why don’t you let them explain more if they are allowed to before jumping to conclusions…”
Everyone’s eyes turned on Celeste.
“A fine point, Celeste.” Jones stated. “We are a part of the FBI… A sector called F3X19. We help with international matters on a more… secret level.” He stated. “This is a bit more ‘at risk’ than the military and more ‘secretive’ than the Secret Service.” he added. Everyone looked at him. “Now, if you please… Introductions.”
Everyone looked at each other. Celeste sighed in annoyance. “I’m Celestine. You can call me Celeste.” She stated and pushed her long black hair behind her ear.
After she did her introduction, a door opened then closed behind the two agents. Footsteps fell and soon a tall man stood behind them. Celeste looked up at them and the three agents walked down the stairs.
“I’m Maggie.” The other female introduced.
“I’m Zack.” A male with black hair stated.
“Eric.” The one who argued with Celeste sighed.
“Mitchell.” A silent blonde established.
“Good. Now that we’re all here… let’s explain what you all have to do…” Canes ‘happily’ stated. “You’re all going to go through some trails. One-on-one. There will be no pair work. You cannot sabotage anyone else’s chance. In doing so, it will lead to automatic execution. There are five rooms. Each of you will take a room. Further instructions will be there. Are there any who wish to not join in this program?” Canes asked.
The five looked at each other.
“Is this some type of game? I mean, seriously, do you honestly expect us to believe you about this?” Zack questioned. The other guys nodded.
“This seems like bullshit to me.” Eric pitched in.
“Then if it’s such bullshit, why did you even bother coming? You apparently were quite curious to want to join something that fights for a living. Try it out, unless your too scared you’re going to get your ass kicked.” Celeste snapped.
“Look, pregnant dog, no one asked for your input. And I can kick everyone’s ass here. You want to be the first to find out how bad it’ll be?” Eric offered.
“I’m not going to fight you. I’ll save my energy for someone worth fighting; not some bullheaded jackass that thinks he can win everything. Take all that and shove it up your ass. I’m not going to be stupid and fight.” Celeste coolly muttered.
“You’re really pushing it, you know that?”
“Enough!” Jones finally snapped. “Go find a room and stay there. If we see anyone out, you will be thrown out of here!” He yelled.
Celeste and Eric held glares for a moment. She finally moved past everyone and glanced at Trauski. He had a small amused look in his eye. Celestine walked past the agents, up the stairs and to a hall. Soon, the other four followed.
Celeste picked the first room on the right side. As Eric passed by, she slammed her door shut and locked it. She shook her head and looked around the hotel-like room. She looked at the bathroom, then at the queen-size bed in the middle of the room with a TV placed in front of the bed on a stand. On the bed was a letter in an envelope. Celeste walked to the bed and sat on the edge. She grabbed the envelope and opened it.
“ Trainee:
I know you have many questions about what is going on. I did when I began, but I couldn’t be more secure with my life than now. You are going into a small “training” to become a member in Sector F3X19. What does this mean? It means a new, better chapter to your life has just been added. This sector deals with high national security matters. I know you may laugh, but in a way we are the ‘ninjas of America’; we are the assassins in the night. Everything happens for a reason. This sector has control over the government; over the armed forces. You name it, we have the control. The one ranking we listen to, of course, is the President. Having read this and now knowing what is in store, you have one final chance to leave…
If it is you who comes out on top, you will be joining me back on missions. These are no ordinary fights. Sadly, as most of everyone joins, your not just doing street-fights. Your doing, as stated, specific missions. Stealth, accuracy and strength are key. There are times when hand-to-hand combat come to play, and you will NOT get away unscathed.
Best of luck,
Zeben Trauski ”
Celeste sighed after she completed the letter. She stared at herself in the mirror when a soft knock came to her door. She folded the letter back up and returned it to the envelope. Celestine pushed herself off the bed and made her way to the door. She looked out of the peephole and saw a head of medium-brown hair. She slid the lock open and cracked the door.
“Bon soir, mademoiselle.” He greeted. Celeste looked at the brunette head and smiled.
“Bon soir, monsieur. Ce va?” She replied. He chucked and held his hands up.
“Guilty. That was my limits in French.” He laughed.
“That’s no problem. Please, come in… I’m sorry, I don’t remember your name.”
“Trauski. Zeben Trauski.” He stated as he stepped in.
“Oh! Je regret… My apologizes, Mr. Trauski!” Celeste exclaimed. “I’m Cel--”
“Celestine.” He interrupted her and smiled.
“Right. You can also call me Celeste.” Celeste explained as she shut the door.
“Seems to me you and Eric have problems right off the bat. His attitude won’t get him anywhere with this program…” Zeben muttered to himself.
“It won’t get him anywhere in life except for in trouble.” Celeste agreed. Zeben laughed softly and sat on her bed. Celeste walked over and joined him.
“I was just going to be going around to talk with everyone. One of you will become my partner… Adam was telling that you like to box. That’s something new. Everyone else either has some type of accuracy or a strength… Or know how to street fight… and this--”
“This program is not all about street fighting. You need strength, accuracy and stealth. I know, I read the letter.” Celeste interrupted him.
“I’m really starting to like you. I’ll be disappointed if you don’t make it. You have wit, I haven’t seen you fight, but I see you gave some bruises to Adam.” Zeben laughed.
Celestine smiled. “Well, he wanted to fight. I was just finishing up my gym time.” She laughed.
Zeben looked at her, “You’re from around here?”
“Yes. Isn’t everyone else?”
“No. They’re from all over the United States.” Zeben answered.
“Oh. Yes, I live a few blocks from here. The gym isn’t too far.”
“What gym? I used to live around here.”
“Joe’s. On Gra--”
“Grant Place?”
“Yes!” She laughed. Zeben smiled and looked at her.
“I’m surprised I remember. I haven’t been here for a few years. Is Abigail’s Diner and Bakery still around?” He asked. He put his elbow on his knee and rested his head in his hand.
“Yes. I worked there a few years ago to help me get on my feet. She was so proud when I got a new job.”
“I know it’s late but… Want to go there?” Zeben asked.
Celeste looked at him. “You have to go talk to everyone else, don’t you?”
Zeben laughed softly and rubbed the back of his head as he sat up. “Guess I lied a bit there… I just wanted to get to know you. Secretly, I’m rooting for you. I’m not suppose to keep my hopes up or choose people, but I couldn’t help it. So how about it?” He asked again.
Celeste looked at him with a blank look and thought for a few moments. “How do I know your not lying now?”
“I’m not. I… just needed an excuse to talk with you. I’m sorry, erm.. Jer regrets, or however you say it.” Zeben attempted, flipping his hand trying to think of the word.
Celestine laughed, “Je regret.” She repeated for him, then stood up.
“Don’t worry! I’m buying!” He added. Celeste laughed more.
“Determined for a date?” She inquired.
“If that’s what you would like to call it, then yes, I am.” He grinned. He got off her bed as well and walked to the door.
“Going in your suit?” Celeste asked. He nodded, then shrugged.
“Unless you want me to change.”
“It’s just a small café. I would’ve thought you changed.” Celeste shrugged. “But let’s go.”
“Oui, mademoiselle.” He chuckled.
