A Year before
"You've worked in a restaurant before?" The manager asked, his eyes skimming over her resume.
"Yes. I was a waitress for 6 years. I started when I was 16 at Aina's Cafe. From there I moved to a family owned restaurant. I received my Bartender's License a few months after I turned 21."
"And you're 22 now?"
"Yes, sir."
"And when can you start?"
"Oh. As soon as you need me."
"Well, we can start training you tonight."
"Tonight?"
"Is that a problem?"
"Oh no! Not at all. I... I just wasn't expecting that so soon." She smiled excited at him.
"It'd be a pleasure to have you behind the bar and see what your license can get us. Only thing, you won't have a name tag for a few days."
"Oh, that's fine."
"Great. I'll get you you're uniform." He stated as he pushed himself up and out of his chair.
Aurora shifted slightly in her seat and sighed in relief.
Present
Aurora punched in at the time clock in the kitchen.
"Hey... Aurora... chicka, what're you doin' tonight?" Jose the prep cook called from behind his section. Aurora sighed and looked over at him.
"The same thing I do every night. Jose... Going home."
"Aw, but Chicka... We could go out, yea?"
"No, Jose. I tell you that every single time..." Aurora stated. "I've told you since the day I started." She added on, turned and walked out before he could protest any more.
"Alright. So when can I leave now?" Jessica asked Darren as Aurora came out from the kitchen. Aurora looked at her.
"What? Can't handle the lightweights at 3 in the afternoon?" Aurora snapped at her.
"Was I talking to you?" Jessica asked.
"Do I give a f*ck? Every f*cking time I get into work and you KNOW I don't start the bar right away, you always have some s*it to say! Have you ever worked the night shift? Do you know what a true drunk is like?" Aurora snapped at her.
"Aurora. Stop." Darren coolly told her. Aurora looked at the manager, took in a deep breath and slowly released it.
"Not my damn fault the newbie can't handle bar work..." She snapped out, walked behind the bar, grabbed a towel and a glass, and began to polish the glass.
"Someone needs to get laid..." Jessica slipped in as she walked towards the kitchen.
Aurora gripped the glass and her head snapped towards Jessica.
"Don't. Jessica... I can't have you messing with my best bartender."
"You said that I was your best..." Jessica whined.
"I said no such thing. Stop trying to get your hopes up. I'm going to have to let you go."
"What?"
"You heard me. I expect your uniform on my desk, folded and cleaned, tomorrow before noon." Darren stated.
Aurora looked over at her. Jessica looked ready to cry. Aurora turned and smirked as she set the glass down.
5:00PM
"Alright, let's open for night-shift." Darren called out. "Everyone gather at the bar."
The few waiters, waitresses and cooks gathered at the bar. Darren was seated at a stool. Aurora leaned on her bar as the cooks lined up next to her.
"Alright. Servers, cooks, our specials are grilled chicken sandwiches and the NY Strip steak. Servers, our soup is chowder and, as normal, French onion soup. Servers and Aurora, we have Bloody-Mary's, Mai tai, Bahama blue and drafts on sale. Let's get workin'." Darren stated. Everyone smiled, nodded and returned to their correct places. Darren walked to the door, opened it and turned the lights on.
9:00
Aurora tossed the bottle of vodka up, put her arm around her back and caught it. As she turned, she grabbed the shaker, flipped the top off and pour vodka into the container. she grabbed the plum sake, poured some with the vodka, closed the container and shook it to mix well. As she shook it, she placed the vodka back and grabbed a tall thin glass. She poured the mix in, grabbed a small umbrella, stuck cherries on it and slipped it into the drink. She slid it down the counter. A waitress picked it up and walked off. At this small break, Aurora quickly washed some of her glasses.
