Background -
Yasei no Kage was an orphan who grew up in a village on the outskirts of a desert, with the Forbidden Mountains on the horizon. He was a very unusual child, as he believed in "fairy tales" that everyone around him said weren't true. As a result, he was ridiculed for it and treated cruelly by the people in the village. As he grew up, he began to tell stories of encounters he had with "the Ancients" from the legends while he was out exploring the desert. The villagers grew angry at this, and began to beat Kage in order to shut him up.
Meanwhile, the government of a more civilized city was looking into the tales and were searching for the civilization described in them in order to find mysterious technology they were said to possess. Hearing of Kage and the stories he told, they sent some spies to keep watch on him.
One night, Kage (then age 15) decided he had enough of the abuse, so he stole some provisions and headed out towards the Forbidden Mountains. The journey was going well until the morning came and the heated began to beat down on him. Kage soon found himself becoming dehydrated. He pushed himself forward until, a little after high noon, he felt he could go on no further. He took what he thought would be his final step in life, and the ground swallowed him up and took him to an underground cavern. Kage, completely surprised by this strange turn of events, found that he had luckily landed near a small spring. After letting his body hydrate itself and rest, he set off to explore the underground caverns. Several hours later, he discovered what looked to be the remains of a past civilization. One of the Ancients who Kage had previously encountered emerged from one of the buildings. Recognizing Kage, the Ancient welcomed him to the underground remnants of an old civilization mentioned in the stories. More Ancients emerged and welcomed him. Kage was taken to see the High Council of the Ancients. Upon hearing Kage's story, the Council decided to accept Kage into the city and let him learn of their culture.
Unfortunately, these things would not come to pass. The spies, who had been following Kage, had alerted their authorities of what had happened, and an exploration/raiding party had found their way through the caverns to the city. The Ancients, who were completely unprepared for the surprise attack, were being massacred. Upon learning of the invasion, the High Council gave Kage a rune and a sword, and instructed him (along with some Ancient guards) to escape with the items through a secret passageway. The escape went well, but the city was annihilated.
The passage led out to the desert, where the living group spent wandering for several days. With provisions already low, the Ancients sacrificed their own food and water and gave it to Kage. One by one, the group dropped off and died. When the final Ancient died, he instructed Kage to find the secrets of the rune, use them, and seek revenge for the fallen Ancients.
A day later, Kage found a city built by an oasis. Entering the city, already on the brink of death, he was soon jumped by two thieves, who knew that Kage, even with the sword, was in no condition to fight back. Kage thought that all hope had been lost, when suddenly the rune started to glow. Both Kage and the thieves were startled, especially after the rune embedded itself into Kage's chest. Kage stumbled backward, trying to catch his breath, when he felt a surge of power flow through him. He had never felt this strong in all his life. He looked at the thieves and, with the rage of a wild animal, took his sword and rushed at the two thieves. Both were killed in the demonic frenzy that took place. Ever since this first encounter with the rune's power, Kage has been searching to learn of its secrets, and looking for anyone involved in any way with the Ancients massacre, in order to get revenge.
Originally, Kage's personality was one that was filled with amazement about the world around him. After the villagers started mistreating him, he became more timid and shy, though he was quite lively during his encounters with the Ancients. After his initial rune incident, Kage's personality became more wild and upfront with people, which is in part due to his anger with the world that he has experienced. His fighting style reflects his personality, as it does not really have a form, but has the intensity and the need-to-kill-to-survive atmosphere that animals have when they fight. He generally does not get along with people, as they annoy him as much he annoys them. He does become extremely fascinated with people who actually do put up with him. He also has a weakness for girls who have unusual quirks.
