Chapter one: Sate Winter's Adventure begins
The sun always greets the earliest man. This day, that man exited his room and walked out onto the streets of town. He yawned and stretched as he took in the environment around him. He had arrived last night when everyone was already packed up for the night. So seeing the town wake up vitalized him. Sate Winters began to mill about the streets of the town just to see what it had in store. He had heard that it held many strong warriors and influential people. He needed information and training, so this seemed like the place. He had to find out names and faces and the best way to do so was to be out among the people.
As the shops began to open their doors and the vendors holler out their wares a Man with a cart eased around the corner and wheeled quite close to Winters.
“Authentic Ikazkita armour, weapons, scrolls! Come learn the ancient ways of the people of the light” He stood behind his cart with various items from different battles and tournaments. Gold armour, Gauntlets, swords, scrolls, all kinds of things. He had just left the Collesium where the third World Tournament was being held and ventured past there to expand his sales territory. He should be back in time for the crowning ceremony where all of the fans would be clamouring for momentos. Until then: “Come come! Potions, Scolls, Weapons, Armour, your heart’s desire. Right before your very eyes!”
His name was Fuko, a vendor always on the lookout for a dime. He uncovered a section of his cart showcasing his many potions and elixirs. They were self-prepared for maximum efficiency and even here in the town he slung the same lines he did at the tournament. Spotting Winters and recognizing a fighter, He looked the man dead in his eyes as he passed. “Do you wish to be as strong as a titan, nold as an Uzumaki, fast as an Uchiha?” I’ve got it all mixed up here, special elixirs that will make your wildest aspirations a reality. Use some of these and maybe next year you’ll be winning the World Tournament!”
Releasing a small chuckle, Winters peered into the cart. He picked them up and eerily stared into their contents. There were blue ones to heal magic, red ones to heal one’s physical stature, then two other sorts that Sate could not figure out, They simply read “Concoction” and “Concoctionx2”. Placing them back in the cart Winters sat up to face the man again.
“Thanks…” he said, “…but I’d rather not. They don’t help too much. I might take this blue to help with magic, but it has this nasty risk of paralysis” He picked the bottle up and began tossing it back in forth. Left hand to right hand. Left. Right. He could tell the weight of the container, about ¾ a pound. He didn’t even watch it with his eyes, just hurled it around right to left. Up and down.
“I do have a question though” Winters said, “Who are these light people? Nobody I ever heard of.”
“Oh oh oh! The people of the light are the Ikazkita” A voice said. Sate turned to see a hyper-active girl come around the other side of the cart. “uh…they’re some heaven sent people or something…but I think they just wanna rule the world or some crazy stuff like that”.
The girl had bright blue hair and an overly-large sword strapped to her back. She was dripping wet and looked like she had just come out of the lake from swimming. She stared at Winters as he juggled the bottles then grinned.
“That’s pretty good! I wish I could do that…but knowing me…I’d probably just drop them…I’m way too clumsy”. She giggled then took a step closer to the cart. “Hey what’s your…Oh No!”
She suddenly started to look around. She spun around in a circle then looked into the cart. A small brown stripped ferret was crawling around in the items. “Eno!” she yelled as she wnt over to reach for the ferret. The ferret had other plans. He moved around knocking things over but not breaking them.
“Eno! Stop! I don’t have any money to pay for that!” She shouted then finally just covered her face. She parted her fingers and gazed through them. She turned and looked at Sate. “I’m Dailan…”She murmered from behind her palms.
Before Winters could respond a figure dressed in black robes on them walked up and took a look at the different concoctions in Fuko’s cart. He wore an orange mask that swirled around and circled onto his right eye. Winters was a little surprised at how he just appeared, and before he could say anything the figure spoke.
“Quite a selection you have here, but my interest actually lies in…”He turned slowly to Sate, “You. You are a very unusual ninja and I would like to employ your services.”
Quizzically, everyone focused on this new figure that looked much more menacing than the others. He was taller, and for some reason held the air of great importance. However, while everyone’s focus lay on him, Eno still rummaged through the cart. He went unnoticed, until he accidentally knocked over a bottle of Concoctionx2. The lid broke and the contents of the jar spilled over onto the small creature. He instantly remained still and began to glow.
The only one that noticed at first was Fuko. At first he had just heard the breaking of the small bottle, but then, he say the furret frozen and the small glow. He began to back up. “Oh hell” He whispered to himself. “Oh hell…”
Winters looked over and saw Fuko. His mind raced around the cart. First the small child that was unusually interested in him, then the masked figure that wanted to employ him, and Fuko, the cause of all this fuss. His cart attracted wierdos, himself included. However, Fuko’s face snapped him out of his thoughts. He followed his eyes until he saw what they were focused on. He had to act fast.
A cloud of smoke shot from his sleeves as he reached for the furret. The smoke was a unique soot that was the trademark of Sate and his clan. He used it to both hide his kunai that he pulled out of his sleeve and absorb some of the Concoctionx2 from the coat of the ferret. He then flung the creature far from them in an effort to isolate it. ‘He who strikes first strikes best’. That was the code of the Black Soot Ninjas.
The beast released a low guttural groan as its fur changed to a darker hue. It shook and moaned as it seemed to cough out pain as its body shifted around on its inside. Its head snapped to one side as its bones began to pop in and out of place. It began to grow larger and more muscular as its tail flipped and curled. Soon it went from a few ounces to well over twenty lbs and its fur turned a deep sickly blue. Its head snapped back into place and it opened its mouth to show its large jagged fangs.
The figure that stood next to the cart now jumped back in the other direction. Sate could almost see his smile behind his mask. “Well Sate Winters, let’s see what you’re capable of.” He then landed on the roof of the nearest building to watch the ensuing fray.
The beast began charging after Sate, which was expected since he was the one who threw it. Fuko pushed his cart out of the way frantically and peered between its planks. He had never seen this concoction tried before, especially on a ferret, but judging by the results, Fuko seemed quite pleased, while Sate began his fight.
It was a pleasure.
“Ha HA!” Sate yelled. “Let’s GO!” Sate leaped back while releasing a cloud of black soot. Travelling backwards he assessed the situation. The ferret seemed to be moving a lot faster than him due to whatever was in that concoction. Flicking the ball of soot and elixir to the side he made a choice. “He’ll catch me at this rate.” He thought. “I guess I’ll have to lose this!”
Winters slowed his pace and straightened his arms. His left arm straight, it swirled in a circle past his right shoulder, then Right over left, then, raising one leg into the air and holding his other hand towards the earth, Sate Winters’ weapon shot down into the earth. It lightened him a bit and allowed him to back up. His weapon was a length of chain. On it, were wreathed Shuriken, and the end was tipped with a Kunai blade. It was a Shuriken snake, and as it writhed through the ground, Sate prepared to dodge the oncoming creature.
Eno, agitated by the soot lets out a burst of energy from its mouth. Winters could only guess it was a side-effect of the concoction, an overload of some kind. It scorched the ground and before Winters could react, made its way to the small girl.
Before being burnt by the beam, the sound of soft paws announced another beast had arrived on the field. It grabbed Dailan and slung her to safety. She sat up to look face to face with a very large wolf. It was grey in color and had smooth designs along its back resembling runic markings. The wolf growled and stood between the kid and Winters. Deciding that the girl was safe, Sate turned all his attention to the beast in front of him.
The beast would have been quite simple to fight. It had sharp clays and teeth, stay away from those and you have a chance. However, the blast from its mouth made long-range battle not only dangerous, but foolish.
Winters stared at the ferret and decided that close combat was the only option. Risky, but risk comes with fighting right? He plunged into the fray head on, keeping an eye out for that primal blast. The chain came out of the ground and as it emerged, Sate coated it with soot and glass. He had a plan to defeat this beast, but it was a tricky one.
The monster blasted again, regurgitating raw energy that had gone unused in its creation. Though instead of dodging the blast this time he took it. Not directly head on, but Winters allowed the blast to strike his right shoulder and launch him sideways. The force of the blow ran through his body and using the sideward momentum, he was able to bounce off a wall and latch onto the creature’s back. There he was safe from the creatures claws and teeth, and he was now far to close for the blast to reach him. The chain followed his motion and wrapped around the creature, its shuriken piercing its skin. Once secure, the chain was a convenient place for sate to hold onto, as the creature bucked and shook to try to get both the man and the chain off of it.
Winters clung on for dear life. If he let go he would be in quite a spot, and hopefully the concoction won’t last forever. If it did, then he would just stay here and let the creature bleed out from the wounds the shuriken in his chain were giving him. He didn’t want to kill the ferret, it was just protecting itself. When it collapsed from lack of blood, he could heal it up.
Without warning, the whole beast rocked to one side. It almost tipped over from the force. Winters squinted one eye till he saw the cause. It was the wolf. It attacked from underneath, and toppled the creature. What kind of wolf was this? The beast fell to the right, causing Winters to land on his right shoulder. The pain from the impact and the burn was excruciating. As tingles like nails shot up his arm and into his brain, he felt the creature begin to shrink beneath him. It grew smaller and smaller until it was again its normal size.
A bit weak, he lifted the furret up in his hands as Dailan rushed over. “Here” he said, “I’m sorry about what happened to your ferret” Sate reached into his pocket and pulled out some gold coins. “Find that coot Fuko and find a healing elixir or something for it. Ok?”
Sniffling the little girl took her bloody ferret over to the cart. Winters leaned back and stared at the wolf. It had its teeth bared and looked ready to fight. Though Winters was the farthest thing from it. Before he could stand, the dark figure landed between Winters and the wolf.
“You are quite an interesting person Sate Winters.” The figure said “And it would be a shame to lose you to something like this.” He turned his head and looked at Sate through the hole in the mask over his right eye. “So in exchange for your services, I’ll help you dispose of this animal.”
The wolf still bearing its teeth began to walk toward Sate and the hooded figure. As it crossed over, its fur began to grow inwards, shrink into its skin. The patterns on its back shifted as the fur began to fold over into what appeared to be fur skin clothing. The head of the wolf retracted and the newly-formed woman in front of them shook a bit to ruffle her clothing into place. “ANIMAL” She said. “And what animal are you inquiring about?” Her voice was harsh and she seemed to growl with every word.
“I’m not meaning you she-wolf” he said. He spoke as though he had encountered the wolf-lady before. “We just don’t know what that concoction is capable of.” He eyed the young girl and the ferret. “I suggest you keep an eye on that ferret just in case there are any side effects”
Winters stumbled to his feet. He muddled about a bit feeling quite weak. He picked something off the ground then turned to the masked man. “Well I don’t think that he’ll cause us any more trouble.” He blurted. He also began scribbling on a piece of paper.
“My name is Tobi Mandara” the figure said. “I would like to employ your services to capture a certain ninja.” He turned away from the woman who had seemed to take a disinterest in the situation. She reverted to wolf form and sprinted away. Both Winters and Mandara kept an eye on her as she vanished. The threat gone, Mandara continued. “We shall discuss the terms of employment. Like you I am also looking for a ninja, so I think we can help each other.”
Sate didn’t like this guy. He assumed too much and had too much information. However, at the time he couldn’t do anything about it. His arm had started bleeding again and he could already feel the effects of the adrenaline leaving. His mind began to blur and he knew he didn’t have much time. He finished writing the address of the inn he had been staying at and added a note. “Please make sure no one searches me.” He crumbled up the ball and threw it to the girl who had just finished administering to her ferret. Thankfully she caught it. He then turned back to Mandara. “Alright. I’ll see wha… wha…” He then passed out onto the ground. “First could you make sure I get back to my room safe? K thx” With that he blacked out.
Hope you all enjoy!
